Module 6.1 : Memory
-------------------
3 basic processess of memory,
Information > Encoding > Storage > Retrieval
-------------------
Context-Dependent Memory Effect
Tendency for information to be better recalled in the same context in which it was originally learned.(eg. learnt on de beach, remember better on de beach than in a room)
-------------------
Three stage model of memory
Sensory Memory: storage system that holds memory for a very short period of time (i.e 3 - 4 secs)
STM: storage and processing system that holds information>memory for a max of about 30 secs
LTM: storage system that holds memory for a long period of time(i.e more than 30 secs)
-------------------
Chunking: Process of enhancing retention of large amount of information by breaking it down into smaller, more easily recalled chunks.
-------------------
Three Component Model of STM
Phonological Loop: Speech based portion of the STM
Visuospatial Sketchpad: Visual based portion of the STM
Central Executive: Control unit of STM, managing information from PL and VS
-------------------
Consolidation: Process by which STM is converted to LTM
-------------------
Elaborative Rehearsal: a method of rehearsal in which you focus on the meaning of the material.
-------------------
Semantic Network Model: Information is held in networks of interlinking concepts.
-------------------
Levels of Processing Theory: Belief that how well or how long information is remembered depends on the depth of encoding or processing.
-------------------
Types of Long Term Memory
Declarative (Knowing That): Facts and figures, Recalled with concious effort. (of which consists Semantic Memory, Episodic Memory, Retrospective and Prospective)
Procedural (Knowing How): Habits and motor behaviours, Recalled without concious effort.
-------------------
Contructionist Theory
A theory which believes that memory is not a replica of the past, but a representation, or recontruction of the past.
